Gustavo Carvajal is a founding partner of the Firm and heads its Environmental Practice Group. Although based in Mexico office he spends plenty of time in the Playa del Carmen office.

Mr. Carvajal divides his time between advising project developers and companies and litigating environmental matters. He also participates in the Firm’s international arbitration practice, where he has represented U.S. and Spanish companies that have obtained favorable awards against Mexico for NAFTA Chapter XI and B.I.T. breaches.

Mr. Carvajal received his law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1991 and earned a Masters in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Mr. Carvajal is the author and co-author of various books and papers, including "Inherent conflict of interest built into the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation" (submitted to the public by the Comisión for Environmental Cooperation, November 2004); “Evidence in Arbitration Procedures under NAFTA Chapter XI” (Asper Review of International Business and Trade Law, Volume III, 2003); and “Metalclad: Four years away from the Award” (Revista de Derecho Ambiental y Ecología, Sección Doctrina y Jurisprudencia, December 2004).

Mr. Carvajal serves on several corporate, governmental, and nonprofit boards, including the board of Reforma, the leading national newspaper in Mexico, and the Governing Council of the Chapultepec Park (equivalent to Central Park) in Mexico City.

Mr. Carvajal is fluent in English and Spanish.
